Videoconference, 16 June 2026 — The tenth meeting of the ECAC Network of Communication Specialists (NETCOM) brought together communication professionals from across the ECAC Member States to exchange experiences and discuss emerging communication challenges facing the civil aviation sector.
Discussions focused on progress under the Network’s 2026 work programme, including national initiatives to promote the safe and lawful use of drones, as well as the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in aviation communications.
Participants also explored communication aspects related to the carriage of lithium batteries by air. Members agreed to continue developing the Network’s activities on these topics throughout the year.
NETCOM welcomed a presentation by Giovanna Laschena, chair of the ECAC Network on Diversity & Inclusion (NETD&I), who highlighted the importance of inclusive language in fostering a culture of respect and equality across the civil aviation sector. She also emphasised that the use of inclusive language also plays an important role in helping organisations attract and retain young talent.
Francesco Barraco of Toscana Aeroporti shared insights into the use of artificial intelligence in crisis communication. Through practical examples, he demonstrated how AI-driven tools can support communication strategies and help airport operators turn challenging situations into opportunities to strengthen public trust.
The discussions reinforced the importance of inclusive, proactive and forward-looking communication, and ensuring that communication professionals remain informed of the latest developments shaping the European civil aviation community.
