London/hybrid, 17 June 2026 — Support for Member States in addressing the rapidly evolving regulatory and operational challenges associated with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) was the focus of the first meeting of ECAC’s UAS Working Group, held in London and online on 17 June 2026.
Hosted by the United Kingdom Department for Transport, the meeting brought together 14 experts from 12 Member States to exchange knowledge and experience on key UAS developments, identify common challenges and explore opportunities for greater cooperation and the sharing of best practices.
Participants discussed a range of issues, including the role of aviation authorities in responding to UAS incursions or attacks, which may require the use of counter-UAS systems, and shared information on developments related to crossborder UAS operations. The exchanges highlighted common challenges across Europe, particularly in relation to regulatory and operational complexity and the need for greater coordination.
The discussions also underlined the significant opportunities that UAS can offer for aviation and the wider economy, while reaffirming the importance of maintaining safe, efficient and sustainable operations.
Looking ahead, participants identified priorities for the group’s future work programme. These include gathering information on Member States’ regulatory experiences and exploring the development of a discussion paper on the evolving role of counter-UAS measures in the aviation sector.
These discussions established a foundation for continued cooperation and the sharing of expertise as Member States respond to the evolving UAS landscape.
